Properties allow you to give your products filterable information. They also serve as the basis for generating variants. You can create various properties and assign them options - for example the property Size with the options XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL.

Creating a property
A property consists of its basic information and its values.
In the basic information you set, among other things:
- Name, for example "Colour" or "Size"
- Value display type, see the next section
- Sorting of the values: alphanumeric, numeric or custom
- Display in product filters
- Display on product detail page
Each value has a name and a position. Depending on the display type you also maintain a colour or an image.
Value display type
The display type defines how the values appear in the configurator on the product detail page:

Note: If a value has no colour for "Colour" or no image for "Image", Shopware shows the name as text in that place.
Generating variants
Variants are created on the product from the values of your properties:
- Open the product under Catalogues > Products and switch to the Variants tab.
- Open Generate variants and choose the properties and values, for example the colours Blue and Red and the sizes S, M and L.
- Combinations that should not exist can be excluded under Exclude values.
- With Save variants Shopware creates a variant for every combination.
Afterwards you can edit each variant individually, for example its price, stock or whether it is active.
Variants in the shop: the configurator
On the product detail page Shopware shows every property of the variants as a selection of its own. When a customer chooses a value, the page switches to the matching variant.
What does "unavailable" mean?
A value is unavailable if it does not exist together with the current selection of the other properties. This happens when a combination has been excluded, deleted or is inactive.
Example: A shirt is available in Blue in S, M and L, but in Red only in S. With Red selected, M and L are unavailable. With Blue selected, all sizes are available.
Shopware does not hide unavailable values, it marks them, for example faded or struck through. Clicking one leads to the next matching variant with that value. In a dropdown the note "(Unavailable)" follows the name.
